About The Skyrme Family
My name is Albert Dudley Skyrme
I only started my tree in 2007 mainly because I was interested in my family
name and its origin. There are many suggestions on its origin, the most popular
being the Vikings landing on the isle of Skye. Two brothers made their way
south on the mainland, one ending in Pembrokeshire and the other in
Herefordshire. They were known as skyemen hence the name Skyrme has
evolved.I have, to date ,not traced my paternal greatgrandfather as my
grandfather was born out of wedlock and I have no name to follow. I have
however, continued to trace the Skyrme line.My branch of the Skyrme family have
their roots in Herefordshire, mainly in the villages of Preston-on-
wye,Tyberton,Mocass, Ploughfield, Holywell and Blakemere. They were either
tailors, dressmakers or in service. My grandfather Albert Skyrme moved to South Wales
for work. He became a miner, in fact there is a working in the Cory colliery known as
Skyrme deep, my father James Reginald Skyrme worked alongside his father in the mine
at the age of 12. During the Depression in the 1920's my father and grandfather went
to America to look for work, they stayed with my fathers aunt Mary Holland ( nee
Evans ) in Chicago Illinois, they stayed for 12 months but could not find work and
retuned to Wales. As children the only information we had, was that my grandfather
was an orphan and was brought up by his sister. I have since discovered that his so
called sister was in fact his mother, he was probably ashamed that he was
illigitimate. His mother Olive Skyrme eventually married Enoch Portman also of
Herefordshire.
